About this deal

The book includes over 100 recipes and is broken into two sections: the first showcases period recipes that would have been served upstairs and the second features recipes that the staff would have eaten downstairs. Every purchase supports Harewood House Trust, a charity set up to support our conservation and education ambitions, helping more people discover Harewood has to offer. The recipes are grouped by occasion, which include breakfast; luncheons and suppers; afternoon tea and garden parties; picnics, shoots and racemeets; festivities; upstairs dinner; desserts and canapes; downstairs dinner; downstairs supper and tea; and the still room.

There are in this book recipes for the gentry and the recipes for the servant class respectively separated. Even if you didn't watch the show, which would certainly help, there's a great deal of interesting discussion of food shortages, availability, evolving cookery tools and technologies, and some statistics that may well amaze and confound you. Some recipes have notes that offer a quicker prep option, different flavor combinations, or ingredient substitutions.I like the split of the meals being upstairs/downstairs, however most of the meals are not something I would cook for myself. Other recipes are simply too complicated and labour intensive especially with today’s more time poor lifestyle (and no servants) and the reality that many of us live in flats where the kitchen would barely cover half in a country house.

While the book was published originally in 2019, it's been reissued and will be available as a limited edition gift set on Tuesday, April 5 2022. I haven't actually ever watched Downton Abbey, but I have interest in the era and I like cookbooks, so I thought I'd check this out. Incidentally, if you are looking for something a little different, ckbk’s wide selection of Toad in the Hole recipes ranges from Andy Fenner’s modern Chorizo Toad in the Hole to Victorian versions from Mrs Beeton and Alexis Soyer – who uses steak rather than sausage in his. The Cookbook presents over 100 recipes showcasing the cookery of the Crawley household - from upstairs dinner party centrepieces to downstairs puddings and pies - and brings an authentic slice of Downton Abbey to fans' modern kitchens. This hardcover book contains full color photos of not just the food but also screen shots from the show.If I were to change one thing, it would be to have photos of all the finished products along side of the recipes. With these and more historic recipes, savour the rich traditions and flavours of Downton Abbey without end. As the book is reflecting the divided class of Downton Abbey, and the cookbook likewise is divided (mostly) into two parts. A lot of the recipes use almond flour, dried fruits and nuts and alcohol, common ingredients at the time, none of which I ever bake with.
