Remember, a cold shoe means there’s no power transfer between the GoPro/Media Mod, and the Light mod (versus a hot-shoe would have connectivity of some element). In fact all components of the GoPro ‘Mod’ ecosystem are self-contained from a power standpoint, and somewhat disappointingly can’t share power. Meaning, if you walked out the door with the Media/Light/Screen mode, you’d have to charge three different units including the GoPro itself (GoPro, Display, Light…the Media Mod is powered by the GoPro). All the same, the Insta360 One R produces some of the best stills and video you can get from an action camera. Its 1-inch sensor also handles the crop of image stabilization better than most. Light For Me GoPro Video Lighting System
Finally, to get a bit more action-like for this action-camera, I head out for a ride. Now I actually decided to go with the cargo bike for a unique reason: It allows me to light the foreground pretty nicely on this moving object – similar to doing any other sports activity at night. Beyond that, there’s a small light on the front of the bike, but honestly it’s less powerful than the GoPro light. They both actually have fairly similar battery lifetimes. It’s also designed for heavy underwater use – so that’s an element of it. Either way, I point this out merely because there are plenty of options here, and I think the biggest advantage of the GoPro light is just that it’s really damn small. Whereas if you need a crazy big light, such as to illuminate a large vehicle, it’s not really the best choice. More recent GoPro models have included a few genuinely useful upgrades. Built-in mounting fingers make it much easier to attach your action cam to different mounts – or fold them away for use as a tidy vlogging tool. Already a proven rival to GoPro’s Hero series, the modular Insta360 One R is now available with a sizeable 1-inch sensor. In our review, we found that this gives it low-light abilities which are brighter, cleaner and more detailed than its GoPro rivals, plus a native dynamic range that's better than any other action camera. Its raw stills are impressive, while videos are sharp and punchy, in both 5.23K/25p and 4K/60p modes. Battery Life: While GoPro lights come with a rechargeable battery, keeping your light’s battery charged during long filming sessions may be challenging. For this reason, finding a light that offers enough battery life is crucial.

As the name states, the Neewer Waterproof light can travel down to 131 feet or 40 meters since it’s sealed with a high-pressure waterproof ring. However, this light works great on land if you’re filming past sunset or in low-light environments. Overall, this light was much better than what I expected for its relatively low price point. Light Mod is easy enough to use and provides a surprisingly high amount of light. In terms of color temperature, Light Mod does produce a distinctly white 5,700K, which will be too cool for some, though it can be warmed-up to 5,000K by using the diffuser cover. You're on a budget: Better off buying one of the older GoPro Hero models to make your budget go further.
